Murugan is the son of Shiva and Parvati and the Hindu God of war.
Murugan holds a spear or vel with his vahana or peacock next to him.
Shiva’s other son besides Ganesh is Kartikeya, also known as Kumara, Skanda, Subramanya, Shanmukha or Murugan (used in Tamil Nadu). Murugan has four hands that hold a diamond shaped spear, and a double dorje with his two front hands in the abhaya mudra. Murugan’s vahana or vehicle to Murugan’s right is the peacock who struts around admiring his own beauty. Murugan keeps the peacock around to remind us not to let pride and egotism get the better of us. Next to his right hand he holds the vel and a sharp spear. He uses the vel to guard the spiritual progress of the world. The vel is separate from the statue and can be removed. Murugan has a beautiful copper color.
